Welcome to Miss Horst's 5th Grade Class!
I am thrilled to be working with you and your child this year at A.B. Combs! This is going to be an exciting year in which your child will be involved in many engaging hands-on and minds-on learning experiences. This year I will be working with Mrs. Pride as part of our new departmentalization model. I will be teaching literacy and social studies for both classes while Mrs. Pride will be teaching math and science. We are both very excited for this opportunity to focus on two content areas. We feel that this model will allow us to provide strong academics that challenge each student and meet his or her individual needs and goals. We also love the idea of bringing both classes together and have planned several large group projects for the students throughout the year.
I am committed to providing your child with a safe and loving environment. I will give your child opportunities to make choices, but also give them the proper structure and boundaries to help them grow academically and socially. One way in which we do this is by using Dr. Steven Covey’s 8 Habits of Highly Effective People to help our students become the leaders that we know they are.
I look forward to partnering with you and helping your child reach his or her fullest potential. In order to do this, we must work together by open and honest communication. There will be many opportunities to volunteer and be involved this year—reading aloud to the class, academic support in the classroom, field trips, celebrations, and mentoring are just a few! Please look for more information in the coming weeks!
Please feel free to contact me by email ([email protected]) with any questions or concerns you may have. You can also reach me by sending a note with your child or by leaving a message at (919) 233-4300. I am truly excited to be part of your child’s learning experience and look forward to working with you and your child this year! It's going to be a great year!
